She received her undergraduate in journalism (1989) and a Ph.D in Asian Studies in 2003 and has published on Indian democracy, civil society and security. Anne Marie Baylouny

...is a professor at the Naval Postgraduate School, specializing in Middle East politics. Baylouny received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. She is a recipient of numerous fellowships and awards—Fulbright, the Social Science Research Council, the Mellon Foundation, among others. She is the author of Privatizing Welfare in the Middle East: Kin Mutual Aid Associations in Jordan and Lebanon (Indiana University Press, 2010). Her recent work includes publications on militia governments in the Lebanese civil war and Hizbullah. She is currently working on the societal repercussions of the Syrian refugees. She has traveled extensively in the Arab East, living in Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. Before entering academia, she was spokesperson on discrimination and human rights for a national Arab American organization.
